The article is devoted to the unfinished novel «The visions of life» (1919) written by Sergey Auslender. The object of the research is military chapters; the subject is the author’s concept of the First World War. It is shown that «The visions of life» is based on the antithesis of peacetime and wartime. The military chapters are considered in the context of the author’s life and creativity during the campaign 1914–1918. It is argued that despite the widespread opinion that war is a disaster Auslender represented it as radical transformation of a person and the world. It is emphasized that in the representation of the author’s concept of the First World War a special role is played by the pastoral and idyllic images.
