The author examines the outset of film-making of the «Alexander Nevsky» movie. He focuses on the circumstances of creation and the text of its first screenplay which is kept in the Russian State Archive of Literature and Arts (Moscow). This screenplay was written by P. A. Pavlenko alone, without participation of S. M. Eisenstein. The author highlights the main features of the text and attempts to reconstruct the relationship between the producer and the screenwriter, and their attitude toward collaboration. The study is based upon published and archival sources.
