Petersburg as an image-symbol in Dmitry Merezhkovsky’s trilogy “The Kingdom of the Beast”

The article highlights the way the features of Petersburg’s image in Dmitry Merezhkovsky’s trilogy “The Kingdom of the Beast” are conveyed. The traditions of Russian literature classics in portraying the “Northern Capital” are also viewed in this article, special emphasis being laid on the continuation of these traditions in Merezhkovsky’s trilogy. Special role of symbolism in revealing the historiosophical ideas of the author is also highlighted: the symbolic image of the city unites fictional space of single novels into a joint supertext. This article designates major types of myths, included into trilogy’s texts, and reveals the importance of the myths in creating historiosophical mythopoeics.
