The article is focused on the importance of fashion magazines in the life of St. Petersburg philistine women in the second half of the XIX century and early XX century. The source for writing was the illustrated magazines “Fashion Boutique”, “Fashion Herald”, “Fashion Courier”, “Paris Fashion”. Each issue published not only articles on the latest fashions, but also literary works, sheet music, advertisements, household tips, cooking recipes, and announcements of donations. The content of the magazines was constantly changing due to the need to initially establish the range of interests of female readers, their domestic needs, preferences in the sphere of leisure. As historical material, these periodicals convey the atmosphere of the era of the century before last and are so informative that the interest of researchers still attracts a variety of headings. The aim of the study is to show how the everyday life of women was portrayed in the pages of St. Petersburg fashion magazines in post-reform Russia.
