Site sketch: literature as a guide-book

Бесплатный доступ

The article is dedicated to the problems of pragmatics of literature. We have educed one of literature's pragmatic functions: contouring space. We have studied cases when a literary work is used as a guide-book, a map of the region. Connecting the plot and characters to a real place, the writer re-structures and communicates its new characters and an imaginary history. Such literary works often enhance considerably the attractiveness of a territory. The readers acquire a desire to visit the places "inhabited" by literary characters. In these cases a literary work triggers the emergence of new social practices: from different forms of commemorating the literary traces to the tourist industry. The article presents the process of re-structuring of a pretext in the contouring perception of the readers.
