The article is devoted to the analysis of Church press publications dated 1905, which interpreted the origin of revolutionary events. Being remarkably significant for Russian church history, analysis of the roots of the first Russian revolution through the prism of church comprehension has never been a subject of a special study. The article is based both on official and private publications in capital and provincial press, which helped to provide an objective view of the events under analysis. Revolution 1905 painfully disquieted the Russian Orthodox Church, urging to analyze the inner meaning of the events and to find out what had caused them. The lack of necessary historical experience generated two types of publications in the Church press - parallel but oppositely oriented. The first one considered the revolution as means of God`s punishment, or found its roots in the intrigues of the enemies of Russia. The authors of the second group connected all disorders with social and economical conditions and called for the establishing of social justice. Eventually, the first tendency prevailed, which caused the alienation of some part of the society from the Church.
