Refractive index of electromagnetic crystals

Different methods to determine the effective parameters of two-dimensional electromagnetic crystals consisting of thin conducting cylinders are considered. The causes of discrepancies between the results obtained by different methods are analyzed. Common problems of these approaches to the description of the properties of spatially confined structures are discussed.
