The paper examines the state and prospects for the development of conspicuous consumption through tourist holidays abroad. The theoretical basis of ostentatious consumption is systematized, the peculiarity of leisure consumption as a status-role self-identification based on the availability of appropriate household incomes is revealed. The paradox of social inequality is deduced, which entails conspicuous consumption, consisting in distortions of the spheres of social production, namely, the production of goods and the provision of services. A scale of the significance of consumption expenditures has been established, and a place in the ranking for the organization of recreation and cultural events in the structure of expenditures of income groups of the population, their difference has been found, which confirms the presence of social inequality. The unstable dynamics of tourist trips of Russian citizens abroad is indicated, in some places a decrease in their number, accompanied by a pandemic and the closure of borders to certain countries, based on political differences. The characteristics of the introduction of tourism objects are described, which consist in an increase in demand for places in hotels among vacationers. The analysis of investment dynamics in fixed capital in the field of culture, sports, leisure and entertainment, characterized by deep recessions and upswings, was carried out. A positive trend in the growth of domestic tourism has been determined. The leading role of the state in expanding the possibilities of using domestic tourism for the population, building and developing recreation infrastructure facilities, increasing competitive advantages for business, and reducing monopoly power is shown.
