In the late 1980-s - early 1990-s the Chechen-Ingush Republic turned from the oasis of political well-being to the territory of sharp political conflict. In 1987-89 the local intelligentsia and some marginal groups banded together in “popular fronts" and other organizations, and then in 1990, in Autumn mainly, there was uncompromising political polarization between the acting government and those claiming for power. The article discusses the reasons and the course of the political crisis resulting in the drastic consequences.
