Political nationalism and multiculturalism in modern nation-building

The article is devoted to the processes of globalization and integration in the modern world. Modern nationalism in this article is considered as a certain reaction to the ongoing processes of globalization. The contradictions of nationalism are due to the fact that this phenomenon is analyzed not as an ideology associated with the desire for national political independence or national progress, but is equated with ideologies such as Nazism or racism, associated with the manifestation of chauvinism or xenophobia. The article raises the problem of a surge of nationalist sentiments in the modern world. All over the world, especially in countries with a multiculturalist policy, there is a significant increase in hostility towards immigrants on the base of nationalism, interethnic tension has noticeably increased, therefore, there is a need for a deeper analysis of the essence of these processes. The author touches upon the issue of the Ukrainian crisis. The article considers most important distinguishing features of the ideology of multiculturalism, and carries out the analysis of the positive and negative aspects of multiculturalism and nationalism. The main task of the ongoing national policy of the Russian Federation, which is expressed in the rallying of Russian society into a single political nation, through the development of the ethno-cultural diversity of the Russian state, is singled out. The analysis of the multicultural and integration models of building a nation that has been formed in the Russian Federation to date is made. The author makes a conclusion about the implementation of the integration project of the Russian nation-building at the present stage.
