The activity of the Russian Orthodox Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem (ROEM) from 1948 to 1967 was carried out in Israel and Jordan. During this period, the Mission conducted liturgical, representative, economic and administrative activities, defining its duties as an integral part of the Moscow Patriarchate in Israel and Jordan. The activity of the ROEM was significantly influenced by the policy of the USSR, which not only fixed the limits of its activities, but also coordinated almost all aspects of its functioning. The Moscow Patriarchate had an influence on the ROEM, despite the state‘s total control over the activities of the Russian Orthodox Church. In addition, the Mission was under pressure from state and non-state forces. Relations with the Patriarchate of Jerusalem were of paramount importance during the period under review. Inter-Christian relations were given an important role by the leadership of the ROEM in Jerusalem and the DECR of the Moscow Patriarchate.
