In the article we investigate the status of women under the Tokugawa Shogunate, the military government that lasted from 1603 to 1867. The popular game of sugoroku for women, designed to instill in them the norms of Confucian morality, is taken as the source at that time. The connection between the popular game and the art of ukiyo-e woodblock prints has been carried out. We consider the difference between the position of a city and a peasant woman. Based on the produced facts, the conclusions concerning the status and the role of women in Japan under the Tokugawa Shogunate have been drawn.
