This paper presents the results of research and development of semiconductor optical amplifiers for the 840-1550 nm spectral range. The design of a semiconductor optical amplifier based on quantum-well heterostructures is presented. Investigations of the main characteristics (gain, saturation power, noise factor etc.) are discussed.
