The article examines philosophical approaches to the interpretation of the value concept. The author starts with Plato’s and Aristotle’s conceptions of “value”, organically linked with the notion of good, as well as the notions of goal and goal-setting. The article emphasizes the special role of Kant’s philosophy in formation of the doctrine about the value, which was successfully developed by the Neo-Kantians of Baden school, primarily H. Rickert, representatives of interpretative sociology (Verstehen) headed by M.Weber and later by J. Habermas with his distinction of communicative rationality and instrumental rationality.
