The article is devoted to the study of the problem of understanding and interpretation of the concept of self-identification in modern psychological science. Various opinions of scientists regarding the phenomenon under study are given, the generalized positions of researchers are revealed, reflecting the conceptual basis of the term under consideration primarily as a socio-psychological phenomenon, which begins its formation from a fairly early age of a person through interaction with the social environment.
