Biographies of church figures are an important part of historiography. Very often, through a detailed biography, you can understand and evaluate important historical events. In 2021, a book by D. V. Pavlov was published, dedicated to the life and work of Metropolitan Gury (Egorov). This hierarch was known both as an educator, as a leader of the catacomb movement, and as an active bishop who occupied several episcopal cathedras. D. V. Pavlov highlighted various aspects of the life of Metropolitan Gury’s ministry. Among them are the organization of a church brotherhood in St. Petersburg, a confessional feat, and assistance to ascetics oppressed by the state. The author studied the available research on the life of the metropolitan, conducted research in a number of archives - in the State Archive of the Russian Federation, in the Russian State Archive of Modern History, the FSB archive, archives of Belarus, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and elsewhere. The author has introduced into scientific circulation a number of new documents and sources of personal origin. D. V. Pavlov’s new research is described in the review.
