Postoperative mortality and ways of its prevention in elderly patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia

The study included 1,170 geriatric patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia that underwent adenomectomy, transurethral resection of the prostate, or simultaneous surgery in the Division of Urology of the Samara Regional Clinical Hospital for Veterans of Wars between 1995 and 2015. The analysis was conducted by the specialists from the International Centre for the Problems of Elderly Patients (Period 1:1995-2000) and Research Institute for Clinical Gerontology and Rehabilitation of War Veterans (Period 2: 2000 - 2006; Period 3 2007-2015). A total of 335 patients (28.6%) underwent simultaneous surgeries. The implementation of novel diagnostic and treatment techniques into urological practice in the third period (2007-2015) decreased postoperative mortality from 4.3% (Period 1) to 2.0% (Period 3) (р
