The article reviews the relationship between primary and secondary artistic convention in the aspect of semiotics and receptive aesthetics. Defining the potential of conventional forms reveals representation of a collision between sensual and rational, empirically-concrete and abstract. This antinomy is mostly revealed in a literature text with artistic-conventional content. On the material of A. Sinyavsky’s dystopia story «The trial begins» the author shows the possibilities of synthesis of semiotic and hermeneutical methods of literary text interpretation. These methods allow to find in the story prologue the movement of a reader’s conscience made by the writer’s thought, - from emotional and imaginary reception to abstract thought activity. This moment is defined in the article by the situation of transformation of an image to a concept, when the writer’s message, writer’s position and reader’s activity in aesthetic reality of a text are at the same time differentiated and combined.
