This article considers the major issues in the Protestant debates over the Eucharist in the 16th century, which engaged the most important representatives of the first generation of Protestant reformers: Martin Luther and Huldrych Zwingli. On the basis of the materials of the Marburg Colloquy, the author offers a comparative analysis of the teachings on the Eucharist of M. Luther, H. Zwingli and J. Calvin, the latter of whom attempted to create a compromise statement that could be accepted by all Protestants. The author demonstrates that Calvin’s position is a development of the theological views of H. Zwingli.
