Orthodox parishes in Latvia in 1941-1943: caught between exarch Sergius (Voskresenky) and metropolitan Augustine (Peterson)

The author analyzes the jurisdictional conflict between supporters of Metropolitan Sergius (Voskresensky), Exarch for the Baltic Countries, and the former head of the Latvian Orthodox Church Metropolitan Augustine (Peterson) during the Nazi occupation of Latvia. The author studies the problem of jurisdictional conflict at the local level: he considers conflicts within parishes and the statements of various clergy opposed to the exarchal administration of Latvia. The article is based on materials from Russian and Latvian archival sources.
