The idea of the hierarchical structure of the world as one of the causes of depression

Бесплатный доступ

The main issue discussed in the article is the question of the uneven distribution of the level of depression among the peoples inhabiting the planet. Attention is drawn to the fact that the European world is more prone to depressive moods than the Asian world. As one of the reasons for this difference, the idea of the hierarchical structure of the world peculiar to these civilizations is considered. The European mentality sees the world divided into levels differing in the degree of complexity and perfection. The traditional Asian mentality is practically devoid of hierarchical schemes. A European person constantly monitors his position in the social hierarchy, evaluates it according to the existing scale of values. The assessment may be quite low, which inevitably leads to the emergence of depressive experiences. The bearer of the Asian worldview has no idea of hierarchy, nothing forces him to assess his position among other people. The absence of a hierarchy and an associated rating system somewhat reduces the risk of depression.
