The paper reports on the archaeozoological study of the osteological assemblage from the excavations of the Uzundara fortress citadel (3rd-2nd centuries BC) in Uzbekistan. It discusses a sample of domesticated animal ungulates from kitchen refuse discovered in all citadel assemblages. It analyzes the nature of numerous pathological changes recorded on the bones of these animals. Consequences of hard physical work and bone injuries identified among the adult and old animals (Fig. 2) is an evidence of the use of donkeys and horses as pack animals. The paper also reconstructs a specific economic situation in the citadel associated with likely keeping of live sheep as provisions as well as intensive use of beasts of burden.
