The “preobrazhenskie cases” of the years 1930-1931

One of the most important churches in Saint Petersburg - the Transfiguration Cathedral of the entire guard has been associated with many significant pages of Russian history for more than 250 years. One of the most tragic in its history was the period of the late 1920s-early 1930s, when in the context of the campaign of repression of the clergy and laity at that time, two investigative “Preobrazhenskiye cases” were fabricated by the OGPU authorities, in which about 30 well-known believers in the city were repressed: the theological writer E. N. Pogozhev (Poselyanin), Major-General E. M. Kazakevich, N. A. Yelachich and others. Despite all the persecution and repression, the community of the Transfiguration Cathedral was able to survive in the early 1930s and in the following decades of Soviet power, preserving the church building - a monument to the exploits of the Russian guard - from closure and possible destruction. The investigative cases highlighted in the article have not yet been studied by researchers. The article was prepared on the basis of a significant set of archival documents not previously introduced into scientific circulation.
