Overcoming domestic violence in contemporary China. The law against domestic violence (2016): preparation of the bill and the first results of application (2016-2021). (part 2)

In China, the Law on Combating Domestic Violence was passed in 2016. This study attempts to analyze three components: 1) the relationship between social risks and victimization of the population from the prevalence of domestic violence in China; 2) the period preceding the adoption of the law and its actual content; 3) the activities of the police to prevent and suppress the facts of domestic violence (2016-2021). Examples of statistical data and reports are given. The limited (fragmented) information available is noted, which does not allow a comprehensive assessment of the effectiveness of measures taken (for example, the provision of psychological assistance to victims of domestic violence, etc.). Discussion of the research results is presented. The adoption of this law in China was not an isolated legislative act, but is part of a systematic approach to reducing crime and increasing victimological safety of the population, improving the quality of life of citizens, updating the legislative framework in accordance with modern realities. The adoption of the law helps to improve the legal culture of the population, improve the moral foundations of family life, and strengthen the national security of the PRC. In general, the adoption of the law improves the country’s image in the world arena, and also corresponds to the long-term goals that are laid down in the development prospects of the PRC until 2050.
