In September 1794, the First Ecclesiastic Mission arrived on Kodiak Island. At first, the members of the mission had a difficult relationship with the leadership of the RAC in Alaska. In 1799, returning from Irkutsk after episcopal consecration, the head of the mission, Bishop Joasaph (Bolotov), died in a shipwreck. In 1804, the Synod sent Hieromonk Gideon (Fedotov) as part of the first round-the-world expedition to study the affairs of the mission in Alaska. He found a state of conflict between members of the ecclesiastical mission and the governor of Alaska A. A. Baranov. Sailing to St. Petersburg, Hieromonk Gideon appointed the monk Herman to head the mission. In total, the monk Herman stayed in Alaska for 42 years, and during this time there were seven leaders, starting with A. A. Baranov. His relationship with the main leaders of the RAC in Alaska is explored in this article.
