In this article the author discusses the socio-political processes in England in the late XVIII century, analyzes the impact of the press on public opinion, and reveals mechanisms of interaction between political elites and the public. Special attention is paid to a number of national social and political problems: the problem of independence of printed publications, the problem of reliability of information provided and the issue of political manipulation of public opinion.
