The article analyzes transformation as a universal of culture. In particular, the question is being solved whether it is possible to consider transformation as a universal of culture. It is shown that the transformation meets all the criteria of cultural universality. Transformation is represented in all current and pre-existing cultures. Transformation has a basis that is beyond the limits of culture proper. Transformation becomes available to us, being refracted in human consciousness. Transformation is no less signifi cant for us than other universals of culture. It is closely adjacent to other universals of culture or penetrates into them. It is also important that in the process of transformation, the object becomes diff erent, but at the same time, in a certain sense, remains itself. This makes it possible to at least mentally restore the previous state of this object. The key to understanding the nature of transformations is the analysis of inversions in a hierarchical system. To do this, it is necessary to present the object being transformed as a hierarchical system and identify how the ratio of elements in this hierarchy changes during the transformation process.
