The article covers the issue of process of the bifurcation of totalitarian era person’s consciousness. The consciousness of such a person is inevitably struck by «doublethink» (G. Orwell). The self-identification is a big problem for the Stalin era person. The soviet era person (in particular, the leader) refuses to find himself out in the most exact and impartial photo. However, in the end of the Stalin era the leader absolutely merges with its idealized image. The portrait conquers the person, the mask conquers the face. In that case authors consider the 1950-s photo «Marshal Semyon Budyonny by his favorite portrait» by Dmitry Baltermants. Its composition bases on the inclusion of character’s doubling. Budyonny is photographed near his huge, full-scale ceremonial portrait. The photo visually demonstrates that the original and the copy are absolutely identical. Budyonny tries to show that he totally looks like his portrait. The photographer accompanies to his hero, but doesn’t hide the ironical point of view.
