The study examines the ideological foundations of such extremist organization as the Taliban movement. The analysis suggests that the ideology of the Taliban was formed on the basis of the fundamentalist theories of the Deoband School and the radical tendencies of the Tablighi Jamaat movement. The research notes that Deobandism is not deliberately considered to be extremist and is a form of religious fundamentalism, i.e. the system supporting the need to keep the traditional foundations of religion unchanged. The study distinguishes and describes the main principles of the Taliban ideology. They include the fight against global unbelief, the creation of the national Islamic State, an active armed struggle (Jihad), a conservative Islamic revolution, and the uncompromising attitude of “true Islam” to other movements. The differences between the ideologies of the Taliban and the Islamic State, which are the followers of Radical Salafism, make it possible to coordinate the fight against extremist groups on the territory of modern Afghanistan.
