The article is concerned with the leading Western theories and scientific schools, which have unified methodological guidelines in the study of motivational mechanisms of the suicide terrorism and the rationality of its subject. The author considers the socio-political context and pure empirical orientation of the theories, their disregard to the existential experience and metaphysical essence of the protest as important aspects of motivation of suicide bombers, as well as application of the multi-causal approach in the research of this phenomenon. The problem of rationality of extremism is shown on the material of Islamist terrorism, however, the findings presented in this article apply to other extremist movements.
