The article is devoted to the acute to Modern British Literature theme of nostalgia, which is reflected in the works by the authors under research - Kazuo Ishiguro and Ian McEwan. Despite similarity of problems and structures of the novels, approaches to setting the problem of fate and responsibility are essentially different and, to some extent, determined by the writers' outlooks. As for Ishiguro characters it is important to understand the course of events and accept their fate as it is, for McEwan fate in the traditional sense does not exist, thus his characters tend to atone personal guilt. The first concept of fate and responsibility, according to the author of the article, is related to the Eastern literary tradition, the second - to the Western one.
