The problem of suicide in schizophrenia: the family of the patient is in focus (literature review)

The article contains current data on suicidal risk in schizophrenia using the theory of biopsychosocial approach. Methods: Studies were obtained by searching in electronic databases: Pub Med, Scopus, Wiley Online Library, e-LIBRARY. Results. During the lifetime, 44.3% of patients with schizophrenia had at least one suicide attempt. About 4.9% of patients with schizophrenia commit suicide during their lifetime, most of the fatal cases occur in the first years of the disease. Genetic factors account for 43% of suicidal behavior, the remaining 57% are environmental factors. According to 2005 data, the suicide risk factors among patient diagnosed with schizophrenia included: previous depressive disorders (Odds ratio (OR)=3.03, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) 2.06-4.46), previous suicide attempts (OR=4.09; 95%; CI 2.79-6.01), drug misuse (OR=3.21; 95%; CI 1.99-5.17), agitation or motor restlessness (OR=2.61; 95%; CI 1.54-4.41), fear of mental disintegration (OR=12.1; 95%; CI 1...
