The study looks at Chinese festive culture as an important part of Chinese national and family culture. The modern history of China can be divided into several periods that have greatly altered the path of China’s historical development: Xinhai Revolution, Anti-Japanese War, Civil War, Establishment of New China (PRC), Cultural Revolution, Reform and Opening-up Policy. Uneven historical development of contemporary China had an impact on Chinese holidays. Chinese festive culture followed different paths in different periods of the contemporary history of China. Sometimes traditional holidays were canceled or revived; however, traditional festive culture had never disappeared. Nowadays, it has become an important part of Chinese popular life. Chinese festive culture is of a dynamic nature. Traditional holidays are replaced with modern ones that appear due to the new social and political circumstances and the influence of Western culture. Traditional holidays are transformed within two trends: they change in quantity; their functions and roles, rituals and values change as well. However, despite the transformation and modernization of modern festive culture in China, the main function of traditional holidays (the reunion of families and, hence, of the whole nation) is preserved.
