He article is a brief review of the monograph by hierodeacon Grigory (Matrusov) “Canons: rules of Church and rule of life. Problems and practice of application of canons of the first millennium in modern life of Orthodox Church”. There analyzed conclusions, that the author made in each of the four sections of the book. Special attention is paid for discussion by the author of problems of the inspiration of initial rules and possibility of codification of Church Law. Also it is described the author's opinion on his classification of canons, on its objectivity and expediency, as well as about variability in relation to the use of the principle of “applicability-inapplicability”. It is noted that the monograph is an important addition when studying the course of Canon Law in Theological Schools.
