The study is aimed at a comparative analysis of the main demographic characteristics of the population of areas with differing levels of urbanization. An analysis of the demographic situation in the municipalities of the Northwestern Federal District based on official statistics. The focus is also to study the migration settings based on the data of a sociological survey "Human potential of rural areas', held on the territory of the Vologda region to identify the motives of change of residence, and the reasons why the population has no plans to leave.
