Based on archives, the author discussed the creation of a range of products in the USSR garment industry in 1957-1965. The research described the planning mechanism in this regard and the activities of garment factories, trading and design organizations. The author concluded that there had been a system for developing a range of large-scale garments at special regional meetings attended by representatives of trade, industry, and design organizations. At the same time, the full satisfaction of consumer demand was hampered by organizational, economic, logistical obstacles and problematic inter-departmental interaction. Despite the measures taken by Soviet leadership, these problems could not be solved promptly for a number of reasons, primarily because of the restrictions of the planned system. However, the foundation was laid for further improvement of the situation, the saturation of the domestic market with inexpensive mass-produced clothes, and the expansion of their range.
