The article is devoted to the marriage law of the Russian Empire. It considers a number of controversial situations and incidents which arose due to the interpretation and practical application of Russian marriage laws. Among the issues considered are the following: the marriage of schismatics in Russian law of late 19th – early 20th centuries, the laws of the Russian Empire on mixed marriages and their relationship with the canons of Christian Churches, the problem of recognition in Russia marriages contracted abroad, the problem of harmonization of Russian marriage laws with the religious toleration principles proclaimed in the 17th April 1905 decree, Stolypin’s bill “On the Family Rights” and the struggle around it in 1907–1909.
