The authors focus on the development of conceptual approaches to the spatial development of the Russian Federation based on the experts' assessment of the existing scheme of the spatial organization of the country. Like many others, the authors of the article consider the spatial organization of society as a complex spatial system fit into in the natural environment. According the authors, the spatial development means progressive changes in the territorial organization of society. The article notes the internal and external conditions, and determines the preconditions, features and prospects of the territorial development of the Russian Federation, taking into account the impact of global challenges. Among them the most significant for the future development of the social and economic system of the country are changes in the geographical configura- tion of world centers, global changes in the territorial structure of settlement and others. The authors formulate the basic conditions for the spatial development of the country in the long term, taking into account the scale and diversity of the natural resource potential, natural and climatic conditions, the unique geopo- litical position of Russia, unique natural complexes, the retained and growing significant human potential in Russian regions, and others. The article analyzes disproportions and developed trends in the spatial organization of the Russian Federation. Based on it, the authors emphasize the need for interaction between the state, the business community and civil society in the persistent and complicated transformation and development of the territory. Such development is aimed at maximizing and implementing the total resources of the productive forces of all spatial systems that are functioning, being created and planned in Russia in all their diversity, such as macrozones, large economic regions, macroregions, entites of the Russian Federation, municipalities, each locality in the country. channel.
