The article discusses various approaches to assessing the quality of higher education in the Russian Federation, as well as the problems of assessing the quality of education in higher education. The analysis of the dynamics of student admission and graduation from universities in Russia and in the leading regions in terms of the number of higher education institutions and the number of students, including those studying at the expense of budgetary funds and on a paid (contractual) basis, is carried out The research identifies the main trends in the indicators of student admission and graduation from universities in Russia and in the regions of the Russian Federation are determined, the need to take these indicators into account when assessing the quality of education is substantiated. The results obtained can be used in planning and forecasting the number of state-funded places in the areas of training in universities.
