Studies of the patristic literature of the first centuries have shown that while not allowing distortion of the Christian message, the ecumenical councils did not essentially consider the difficulties created by the Chalcedonian definition and turned into the subject of subsequent Christological controversy. As a result, the problems considered to have been solved in traditional (classical) theology long ago reappeared in all their complexity. And new difficulties for Christian theology were generated by the New Testament scholarship over the past 150 years. The article lists these problems and shows that the modification of the Chalcedonian definition proposed by Karl Barth allows them to be solved.
