Employment issues in the Russian film industry

The article is based on a survey dedicated to the Russian cinema employees’ is-sues conducted in 2018 in the St. Petersburg State Institute of Film and Television.Creative industries employees’ working conditions all around the world are veryspecific, and recently their situation has been worsening. International film in-dustry faces challenges of the workforce market closeness and high nepotism rates.The authors of this article investigate the situation abroad, and estimate quantityof Russian film and TV crew members employed and their qualification; measurethe difficulty in the hiring process in the film industry. Close attention is paid tothe study of established working conditions, and evaluation of the employees’readiness to protect their interests. Conclusions concerning priorities for the tradeunions are made speaking of film and TV production, distribution and festivalarrangements workers.
