The article considers dynamics of the life expectancy of the population of Russia as a whole and in the regions of the Siberian and Far Eastern Federal Districts for the past 55 years. The basic data on the majority of the Siberian and Far Eastern regions are the values of life expectancy of the population, calculated by E.M. Levitsky for the date of the first post-war census. Analysis of the indicators calculated by him allowed us to come to a conclusion that in the middle of the 20th century the level of life expectancy of the population in all Asian regions of Russia was below the average Russian level. Based on the statistics relating to the period subsequent to the 1989 census, the article shows how this index fluctuated in the dramatic 90s of the 20th century and the zero years of the 21th century. In this period (by 1998) there was even a larger lagging of the regions of Siberia and the Far East behind the average Russian life expectancy. This lagging grew by 2005 and the life expectancy in all regions of Siberia and the Far East without any exception became lower than across the country. Such situation was neither in 1994, nor in 1998, nor even in 2003. It took place only in 1958-1959. The article shows a rather high effectiveness of the measures of demographic policy, which began to be realized since 2006 in the field of improving the population health of and reducing mortality. In the current period there has been a compensation for the lost years in life expectancy and its further growth. Nevertheless, the situation in the Asian region remains rather grave. Their lagging behind the national level of life expectancy is the result of several factors, among which an important role is played by such objective factors as the natural environment, the character of production, the population structure and geographic specifics of the settlement. In conclusion, there are given propositions on the measures, without implementation of which the life expectancy of the population of the Siberian and Far Eastern cannot be made equal to that across the country.
