In this article the problem of food security as a catalyst-factor, accelerating the revolutionary processes in Russia in 1917, was considered. In addition, the main indicators characterizing the state of the Russian economy in the pre-revolutionary period were studied. The normative activities of the tsarist government, the Provisional Government and the bodies of Soviet power in the sphere of state regulation of the agrarian question were analyzed. It was concluded that the ineffective solution of the food issue served as one of the reasons for the overthrow of the Romanovs' house, then the Provisional Government and, as a consequence, the popularity of the party program of the Bolsheviks and their coming to power as a result of the October 1917 coup.
