The article considers the place and role of the project approach in the innovative development of a modern university operating in the unstable social environment. The main contradictions which interfere with the intensive innovative development of a university are discussed. By studying the experience of the project management implementation in the university, the author shows possible achievement of tactical and strategic objectives of innovative development taking into account the main principles of the modern educational management.
