Illarion Alekseevich Chistovich (1828–1893), who celebrated his 190th birthday in 2018, is an outstanding Russian church scholar and statesman of the 19th century, a longterm teacher at the St. Petersburg Theological Academy, and the author of many scientific works (mainly on the history of the Russian Orthodox Church in the Synodal period). Based on archival materials, the article provides information about the early stages of the scientist’s life, in particular, about studying at the Kaluga Theological Seminary. Extensive information is provided about his parents, sisters, children and about his second wife. The eldest daughter of I. A. Chistovich, Catherine, was married to Lieutenant General M. I. Stavsky. Three of their youngest sons heroically died in the First World War, and the eldest, Illarion Mikhailovich, participated in the White Movement and was sung by A. I. Kuprin in the essay “Colonel Stavsky”. The article covers in detail the family ties of Chistovich and Stavsky. Another daughter of I. A. Chistovich, Anna, was married to Rear Admiral V. K. Zalessky, a participant in the Russian-Turkish and Russian-Japanese wars. The article also provides a brief biographical note on Archpriest Vasily Peretersky, the alleged confessor of I. A. Chistovich.
