Purpose: Retrospective analysis of the dynamics of the scope of the prosecutor’s supervisory powers in Russian legal proceedings. Methodology: Historical-legal, comparative methods was used. Results: The article attempts to trace the evolution of the functions and, as a consequence, the powers of the prosecutor in Russian legal proceedings. For the analysis, the domestic experience and the experience of foreign countries were involved. The results of the comparative analysis allow us to conclude that the reduction in the powers of the prosecutor in connection with the implementation of laws has led to numerous violations by the investigating authorities. Novelty/originality/value: In the article, the author carried out a comparative analysis of prosecutorial powers in foreign countries and modern Russia, as well as domestic experience. The results of the analysis allow us to make an unambiguous conclusion that it is wrong to reduce the powers of the prosecutor in the Russian Federation.
