The article is devoted to researching on prosody and intonation in the history of linguistic studies. Theconcepts of “prosody” and “tone” are distinguished. The notions about the essence of intonation, sentence melodics and tone movement are investigated as well as the methods of recording intonation from the moment of the emergence of this scientific issue up to the appearance of phonological theory.
