Prostitution in the Siberian provinces (late XIX - early XX centuries)

The paper studies such a phenomenon as prostitution in the Siberian society of the late XIX - early XX centuries. The research is based on the data taken from the periodicals, mostly from the opposition journal “Sibirskiye Voprosy", which allows admitting the maximum objectivity and impartiality of data presented in contrast to the official statistics. The paper displays some figures characterising the phenomenon under study, and states the reasons that contributed to the prostitution spread in the Siberian region, as well as the problems accompanying the anti-social phenomenon, in particular, high incidence of venereal diseases.
