The relevance of the article is due to the need to improve the efficiency of the development of the mining industry in Russia in the Arctic zone. Due to the sanctions imposed against Russia, the demand for Russian coal in European markets is declining. Europe used to be an attractive market for Russian coal, but from August Russia will no longer be able to sell its coal here. Now Russia has to turn to less attractive markets such as China and India. The article analyzes the possibilities of the Northern Sea Route in terms of coal transportation, taking into account the possibilities of Russia in the conditions of sanctions pressure. The importance of the development of coal deposits in the system of the regional economy as a source of growth, which consists of the most important mineral resource centers of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation and creates conditions for the dynamic development of the region due to a more complete use of the development potential of the territories, is substantiated.
