Introduction: the article discusses the concept, signs and types of organized crime. A retrospective analysis of the emergence and development of organized crime in Russia has been conducted. Special attention is paid to current trends in crimes committed by members of organized criminal groups and communities, and measures to counter crimes in this area are proposed. Materials and Methods: the following historical, system-structural, formal-logical, comparative methods were used in the preparation of the article. The scientific works of Russian criminologists (monographs, articles, abstracts, dissertations) on the problem under consideration have been studied. Results: it is proposed to adopt regulatory legal acts in this area, to empower organized crime units with broader powers, to improve measures of state protection of law enforcement officers, witnesses and victims of illegal actions by representatives of the criminal environment, and to further scientific research of the problem. Discussion and Conclusions: the authors propose measures to counter organized crime. The reasons and conditions of its appearance and transformation are reflected. Attention is drawn to the trends in the commission of crimes by organized criminal groups and communities. The role of the internal affairs bodies of the Russian Federation in solving this problem is shown.
